In another class, on image-making, we were to create 10 more images again using different materials, but this time of an animal. I decided it was time to let loose and be silly in my process trying things that I don't normally do - some of the results are not good, but some are quite fun and even beautiful. Tahira Nusrat Karim

I have recently begun to take a couple of graphic design courses online through CAL ARTS. Last week one of our assignments for the fundamentals class was to choose an object - not too simple - and create around 10 images of that object using different materials and styles. In addition we were to create a few images that would tell the viewers more than this is an image of more than just that object - by putting other symbols into the image. For example putting a apple with a bite taken out of it on a rectangle might signify Apple the company. I chose an egg as my object - which yes, is too simple - but actually more complex thus. How? Well... because how do you make something that is that simple more complex. Tahira Nusrat Karim
Tauska I've been working on a two book, book set for young children. The books are simple alphabet books that are also fun, educational, diverse, and also a little bit feminist and controversial. They've been a blast to work on, but the daunting part now comes - the business side - finding publishing houses and sending the transcript around. Starting to find good self publishers too! Tauska Some of what we are working on in the anatomy class - studies of bones in different types of animals. It's really interesting to see how the different bones connect and make up the interior of the animal, and also to view the similarities and differences across the various groups. Tahira Nusrat Karim
Tauska ![]() So I'm a bit behind on researching publishers for the new book. However to be fair, I've recently been in London visiting family. It was crazy rushing from here to there to meet everyone in a week, however, I did manage to get some drawing in. I've always loved line drawings - especially in pen - they are just so clean and when traveling it really is an easy thing to just have a couple of pens and a sketch book! This particular sketch was inspired after having visited the high and bold fashions on Bond Street, and the theatricality of Oxford Circus. It was also inspired by spring time and a joy of fresh starts. Tahira Nusrat Karim
Tauska Finally!! The illustrations are done and the book in mock up form. For the first time in a long time I am solidly happy with the work! Now comes the hard part... finding a publisher. Well hard I suppose as its new and new things can be a bit scary, especially when you are putting yourself out there with something close to the heart. At the least, I've begun to research into Canadian publishing houses who do release children's titles - a start :) I'll give myself a week to research and then begin cold calls and emails for submissions. Here is the final illustration Tahira Nusrat Karim
Tauska I have been working on an alphabet book for children for the past 3 yup.... 3 years. OMG (goodness) - this is taking a loooong time. But I suppose in between being hit by a flood, teaching grade one, ever so sweet little munchkins, for the first time - wonderful albeit exhausting, and traveling all around on any time I get off... hmmmmm..... Well, it is almost done, finally. Only illustrations X, Y, and Z, and then lettering to go!! Go me!! I kinda feel like the little engine trudging up the hill right now and almost at the top :) I suppose I should finally start looking for a publisher. Below is the first illustration in the book!! Enjoy!! Tahira Karim
