Fashion and Print
Fashion is a form of art that intersects with most other forms of art making. Within the realm of fashion one comes into contact with drawing, illustration, art history, design, soft sculpture, pattern and print, and so forth. In the business realm it connects with marketing, branding, sales, and perfumery. And, in the realm of economics fashion relates to tipping points, trends, budgets, and the bottom line. The marketing side requires writing, layout, editing, photography, make-up artistry, hair artistry, advertisements, and fashion shows. The creation must take into account ethics, environmental and polluting factors, as well as fair wages. It is a billion dollar industry that connects the entire world.
There was a time I was entranced by this world, actually who am I kidding, I still am. I had decided that I wanted a career in fashion and I created a portfolio of work or rather I designed a collection of dresses based on flowers, emotions, and essence. I learned how to sew, how to silk screen, and how to drape fabric to create patterns. I learned about the history of fashion and about trends.
I interned with a wonderful fashion designer out of Vancouver and learned about fabrics, and fabric design, and was able to work with her one on one. Ultimately I went into teaching, and now, I am going to pursue a MFA in graphic design where I can further develop ideas around design as it relates to the world at large.

This is the portfolio of work I created for entrance into an MFA for fashion design back in 2008. The collection of dresses and perfumes were based on the seven main floral oils of aromatherapy in regard to their essences, and also the architecture of the flowers. Each dress was uniquely designed and draped. Each dress had a perfume created to go along with it, along with a detailed illustration based on classical scarf patterns and the essential oil history of the flowers related to each dress. These patterns were transferred onto fabric for the dresses via silk screen. The finished dresses were modelled and photographed. The photographs were edited in Photoshop to reflect the mood and understanding of the essential oils.
